I'm sure you have already heard that BMW is going to host their first comprehensive Art Car exhibition, after collecting all Art Cars ever created! You also have most likely heard that the exhibition will be held at the BMW Museum in Munich, Germany through September, 15 2011. But did you know that you don't actually have to go to Munich to see it?
You might be asking yourself, how is that possible? BMW has made this possible, by hosting a free virtual tour of its world-renowned 17-car Art Car exhibition. And, while many car buffs admire BMW vehicles' performance prowess, cutting-edge technology, and captivating, classy good looks, we assure you - you do not need to be "into cars" to appreciate the distinctive, slightly edgier virtual tour.
It's hard to believe that the BMW Art Car series launched thirty-six years ago and artists from all around the world have contributed to the series. Among the array of artists who have so graciously set their canvas and clay down to dress up a BMW include Alexander Calder (famous for creating the mobile), Olafur Eliasson (best known for his large-scale installation art), David Hockney (key contributor to the Pop art movement), Jenney Holzer (known for her large-scale public displays, including billboards), Roy Lichtenstein (prominent American Pop artist), A.R. Penck (acclaimed worldwide for his pictographic, neo-primitivist imagery of the human form and other totemic forms), Frank Stella (lauded for his significant role in Minimalism and Post-Painterly Abstraction), and Andy Warhol (pioneer of Pop art movement), and Jeff Koons (contemporary sculpture commissioned to create the final Art Car in 2010 to honor the 35th anniversary of the BMW Art Car series ).
The Head of BMW Group Corporate Strategy and Communication, Bill McAndrews, speaks on their decision to share the collection virtually, stating, "After four decades and a total of 17 BMW Art Cars, they can now all be admired by everyone. The interactive website pays homage to the collection, unique in the history of automobile and the arts. Whilst the originals are often exhibited individually at the BMW Museum in Munich or at significant cultural institutions throughout the world, people are now able to discover for the BMW Art Cars in their entirety. A comprehensive online tour is now available anywhere, anytime."1
