With vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz CLA and the Audi A3 in production the recent trend for luxury automakers is creating more affordable models for consumers. So, in response to this our German automaker is getting ready to produce a new series that is expected to join the BMW of Silver Spring showroom by 2017.
The new version of the 1 series will be a unique BMW, in that the sedan will incorporate a structure and features that we have yet to see the likes of. The series will be the most affordable sedan in the lineup, and will use a forward wheel drive system.
The new structure will be named the Unter Klasse (UKL), or entry-level, platform, and will be first seen in a 1 Series Gran Turismo at the LA Auto Show. Alongside this will be an all-new Mini hatchback built off of the new platform.
While we wait BMW has unveiled some details in regards to what will be under the hood, with a transversely mounted 3 or 4 cylinder engine being available in both petrol and diesel. Down the road rumors are pointing to a plug-in gas-electric version of the FWD 1 series being available to consumers.
