Car makers don't always wait for the next big auto show to roll around before unveiling a new project, and recently BMW chose the Outdoor Fredrichshafen fair in Germany as the stage to debut the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor.

This new concept vehicle from BMW is technically a compact, but it has been built with "premium utility" in mind. Designers at BMW wanted to create a car that made passengers feel like they are riding in a luxury sedan, but could also venture into the great outdoors with all their gear in storage. On top of that, the BMW Concept Active Tourer Outdoor has quite the powertrain combining a small combustion engine and electric motors into one sporty hybrid.

Under the hood, the Concept Active Tourer Outdoor is fitted with a 1.5-liter gas engine as well as a large lithium-ion battery that powers a good-sized electric motor. Together they can produce up to 190 horsepower and get you from zero to 62 mph in less than eight seconds.

If that wasn't already enough, the interior of the car is covered in high-quality materials like MoonWhite and MoonRock leather, which are very durable and can take the beating that comes from having owners who lead an active lifestyle.

We would love to see some of this great new technology applied to the new BMW vehicles currently in production, but there has been no announcement about that yet.
