If you've never had the pleasure of driving in a 7 Series BMW, we're guessing you've at least heard of it. It's known as a flagship of the brand. Today, though, we don't so much want to talk about the 7 Series as we do about one notable BMW part located under the hood. Specifically, we're talking about the fierce V-12 engine.
Coinciding with BMW's silver-anniversary celebration of the 7 Series is a quarter-century birthday of the luxury automaker's beloved 12-cylinder.
The 1987 BMW 750i was the first model to gain the robust engine. With a five-liter capacity, it put out an impressive 300 hp and 330 lb.-ft. of torque. Remember that was in 1987. Just a year earlier the same 7 Series model featured a 6-cylinder engine.
Very much like today, BMW was ahead of its competitors with its introduction of the V-12 engine. It was years before close rivals brought something similar to market.
While it's evolved a great deal over the past 25 years, the 12-cylinder engine is going strong in the new BMW lineup. Specifically, it's situated in the new 750Li. And we're proud to say it puts out 235 more horsepower and 110 lb.-ft. more torque than the first generation. In addition, it's mated to a playful, 8-speed, automatic transmission boasting two modes (Manual and Automatic).
