For years drivers across the pond have been purchasing diesel-powered BMWs. Regardless of diesels' persuasive performance and efficiency gains, they have by no means been as popular in the United States.
It's not that automakers have yet to attempt. BMW, for example, first brought diesel-powered cars to the United States back in 1983. Back then, it was the fastest production car in the world. However, for some reason it was only available for 1 model year.
Years later in 2009, the luxury automaker tried again giving buyers a diesel, sporty alternative to gasoline. And luckily the luxury automakers perseverance paid off. With the diesel powerplants equipped in a 3 Series model capable of completing a 0-60 sprint in a mere 5.3 seconds, BMW transformed precisely what the gas-alternative was capable of. A diesel BMW X5 CUV with a 0-60 second sprint time of just 6.9 seconds quickly followed.
It should almost go without saying that, today, the luxury automaker can try a little less than they did back in 1983. Today consumers across the world are aware that performance will always continue to be at the center of each BMW made. And, drivers in the United States now understand this to be just as true for BMW diesel models as their gas variants. And, drivers today strive for the most fuel efficient vehicles.
This is something, the luxury automaker can easily offer consumers with their diesel technology. Hence, comes the official announcement that BMW will be bringing two, oil-burning engines with enhanced efficiency stateside: an all-new turbo 2.0-L 4-cylinder and turbo 3.0-L 6-cylinder. Both anticipated to be rated at 180 horsepower and 255 horsepower respectively. And, according to reports you can look forward to to see the 4-L in both the 3 Series and X1; the 6-cylinder - in the X3 and X5.
