Frequent visitors of the BMW of Silver Spring blog know that while BMW is a purveyor of peak performance, it's also a shepherd of the environment. Recently, this is perhaps most clearly demonstrated by the development of the new i -Series.

The reality, however, is that BMW's initiatives and stake in the environment are neither new, nor are they superficial. It's simply that BMW doesn't go around tooting its own horn, regarding it environmental initiatives.

As such, many people don't know that BMW has actually been vested in sustainability since its inception. In 1973, when "green" was still used strictly as a reference to the color, BMW was the first company in the auto industry to hire a dedicated environmental officer. Their efforts grew over the years. And, in 2009, the Bavarian automaker inaugurated a dedicated Sustainability Board.

So you see, there is much more to BMW than performance and panache. Don't want to take our word alone? Maybe you'll take Dow Jones. They've just named BMW the "most sustainable automaker", for the seventh year in a row.

Speaking on their leadership position within the Dow Jones' Sustainability Index (automotive sector), Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman, Board of Management, BMW AG said, "The success of the BMW Group is built on a long-term approach and responsible action. We are pleased to be recognized by the Dow Jones' Sustainability Indexes...Being ranked sector leader for the last seven years underscores our corporate strategy and approach. I would like to thank all of our company's 95,000 employees whose day-to-day work makes this progress possible."1
