The iconic BMW 328 roadster was manufactured between the short, four-year window of 1936 and 1940. The body of the car was conceptualized by Peter Szymanowski, who served as Chief of Design, BMW, following WWII. Overall design, however, is credited to Fritz Fiedler.
Like new BMW models gracing BMW of Silver Spring showroom floors today, the BMW 328 was highly esteemed as being ahead of its time. Some of the roadster's more standout features included a tubular space frame, and hemispherical (or cross-flow) combustion engine.
Under 470 units of the BMW 328 were produced, making them a hot commodity during the late thirties...and perhaps an even hotter commodity today. During its prime, the 328 earned a podium finish at numerous Mille Miglia events, won a RAC Rally in '39 and came in fifth in its class in the '39 Le Mans 24 Hours race.
Being an antique isn't hindering its gravitas, either. Twelve years ago, in 1999, the BMW 328 roadster was named one of 25 finalists for the global "Car of the Century" title. And, one of the 464 models ever made just took "Best in Show" at the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d'Elegance.
It goes without saying, Lothar Schuettler, the owner of the award-winning classic BMW model is beaming with pride. Similarly, BMW of Silver Spring, located at 3211 Automobile Blvd Silver Spring, Maryland is proud to carry a distant cousin of the iconic 328 roadster - the BMW 328i convertible. It might have lost the original roadster's voluptuous curves in favor of a more lithe-looking body and aggressive performance. But, like it's forbearer, it's ahead of its time - and certain to take your breath away.
