BMW launched a new eco-friendly sub-brand, the BMW i, they've now released sales goals for the i3, further proving their commitment to the rapidly growing electric vehicle market.  BMW is aiming to sell a minimum of 30,000 units per year starting in 2014!

Think the goal is a little lofty? Consider for a moment that Mini sold 30,000 units of a comparable model, the Clubman, in 2010 - when the market was still recovering from the 2008/2009 global economic crisis.

BMW's leader of global sales and marketing,  Ian Roberston, says BMW is "targeting volume production for the i3" and that sales volume could be "comparable to one of the lower-volume Mini derivatives."1 And, if sales exceed expectations, Roberston says, "...We can easily increase our output if opportunities arise."2

BMW will launch the i3 EV, formerly known as the Megacity Vehicle, in 2013, under the new i sub-brand. They will also launch the i8 plug-in hybrid. BMW indicates that the i8 two-door coupe provides the performance of a sports car and the fuel consumption of a conservative compact.

The world is changing - and we are driving this change," says Roberston. "This is the next premium."3
